هناك تاريخ حول هذا الموضوع، لكن الملخص هو اتاحة فرص وخيارات اكثر للولوج على شبكة الانترنت. هناك مجتمعات (مثل الصين وروسيا و... الخ) لا تتعامل الا بلغتها الرسمية، والقليلون الذي يستخدمون اللغة الإنجليزية فيها، وبالتالي فان موضوع أسماء النطاقات المدولة تكمل المحتوى المحلي لديها.
