manhal,

you can easily build and setup virtual labs using a variety of software.
  this is one of the more recent (and interesting) router softwawre
i’ve spotted recently: http://freerouter.nop.hu. then of course,
there’s:
* bird
* quagga
* goBGP
* exabgp
…and lots of other routing software that you can think about using as
well.

to setup labs, i’d suggest looking through the material from afnog
workshops. start with the SI-E class:
http://ws.afnog.org

remember that bgp is a just tool; what’s more important than simply
learning bgp, is learning how the network is *meant* to operate first.
during the sdnog best practices class during sdnog-2, we spoke about
working your way “up the stack” - that means an understanding of
cabling, addressing, then network segregation depending on services,
setting up a proper switching environment, running an IGP (ospf/is-is)
properly, and, then, BGP. it might seem counter-intuitive at first,
since you might just be interested in BGP, but, in the long run, it’ll
serve you much better.
