Hi sara

L2TP is the Layer 2 tunneling protocol and has multiprotocol support. Originally designed to extend the PPP standard across "intervening" networks.

IPSec is a Layer 3 authentication and encryption protocol. So the L3 IP traffic being tunneled by L2 L2TP tunnel is authenticated and encrypted by L3 IPSec.

( L2TP does not have encryption , thats why its used in conjunction with IPSEC.)

Regards

Subject: [sdnog] L2TP/IPsec and IKEv2/IPsec VPN?!

Hi SdNOG community,
Wish you Happy Eid , it's almost here :-)

Can you please help me to understand the difference between these two types of VPNs:
L2TP/IPsec and IKEv2/IPsec?

Thanks in advance!
